Elected officials from every level of government have endorsed Jones

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Elected officials who represent San Antonio in local, state, and federal government have joined the growing coalition supporting Gina Ortiz Jones as the next Mayor of San Antonio. These leaders, who together have more than 100 combined years of experience representing San Antonio, believe Jones is the only choice to lead the city for the next four years.

Elected officials from every level of government who have endorsed Jones include:

  • City Councilmembers Teri Castillo, Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, Phyllis Viagran, alongside Councilmember-elect Edward Mungia
  • State Representatives Josey Garcia, Diego Bernal, and Trey Martinez Fischer
  • State Senators Roland Gutierrez and José Menéndez
  • U.S. Representatives Greg Casar and Joaquin Castro

U.S. Representative Castro says, “The future of San Antonio is being threatened with federal and state funding cuts. Gina is the right person to lead San Antonio for the next four years, because she understands the strong relationship the City must have with the State and Federal government, as well as the power of City government. With a $4 billion budget and more than 15,000 employees, the City is one of San Antonio’s largest employers with the power to influence every other sector.”

Adding to the support, former Mayors Julián Castro and Phil Hardberger have endorsed Jones for Mayor, saying in a joint statement, “We are confident Gina will bring our community together with a strong, positive vision for our city’s future and a commitment to serving all San Antonians.”

These endorsements reflect Jones’ ability to build a coalition, a crucial skill that allows the Mayor to effectively pass policies and the annual budget with a majority vote on City Council. The broad coalition is reinforced by the 27% of the vote Jones already earned in a crowded field of 27 mayoral candidates during the general election, winning every single council district.

Jones said, “Following my upbringing in San Antonio’s public school system, this growing coalition reflects yet another example of how my community has invested in me. These folks represent the coalition necessary to not only become San Antonio’s next mayor, but to lead this city with the care and attention that she deserves.”
